Grußwort zum 5. Afrikanischen Filmfestival Hamburg

Afrika wird von vielen Europäern reduziert auf wenige Informationen, Eindrücke und Erfahrungen. Zentral ist dabei, dass Afrika als Einheit gesehen wird – in der Wahrnehmung scheinen alle Schwarzafrikaner gleich zu sein. Nur geringe Unterschiede werden eingeräumt: Regionen sind friedlicher oder weniger friedlich, stabiler oder instabiler. Afrika ist aber kein Land, sondern ein Kontinent mit 54 Ländern und über 3.000 Ethnien.

Die Rolle und Stellung der Frau und das Ansehen ihrer gesellschaftlichen Leistung, die bei diesem Filmfestival Zentrum stehen, ist von Land zu Land und oftmals von Ethnie zu Ethnie unterschiedlich. Auf dem Kontinent Afrika erleben wir in einigen Ländern die Unterdrückung von Frauen, in anderen Regionen und Nationen sind sie hoch angesehen, etwa als Mütter, die maßgeblich die Bildung ihrer Kinder fördern.

Frauen spielen auch ökonomisch in Familie und Staat eine große Rolleund haben in vielen Ländern zunehmend politischen Einfluss.Auch dies ist ein Teil Afrikas! Die Aufmerksamkeit der Filmemacher/innen und der Medien gilt - im Sinne der Opfer - meist den negativen Erscheinungen wie Unterdrückung durch Familientraditionen und staatlichen Institutionen.

Das Programm des 5. Afrikanischen Filmfestivals Hamburg im Studio-Kino verspricht erneut, ein facettenreiches Bild Afrikas zu zeichnen, in diesem Jahr mit demBlickafrikanischer Filmemacherinnen auf den Einfluss und die Sichtweise der afrikanischen Frauen. Ich wünsche mir, dass das Festival ein herausragender Mosaikstein seinwird, der neue Informationen, Eindrücke und Erfahrungenbietetzu einem Kontinent, der nach wie vor in seiner Vielfalt nicht erkannt wird.

Welcome Note of Sylvaina Gerlich

Africa is reduced to a few information, impressions and experiences by many European people.

Focus is the presumption that Africa is seen as one big unit, with it comes the perception that all black Africans are the same. Only small differences are acknowledged like regions are more peaceful or less peaceful, more unstable or stable, but Africa is not a country, it’s a continent with 54 countries and over 3.000 ethnic groups.

The role and position of the woman and the image of her is different from country to country and often ethnicity to ethnicity. 

In some countries we witness oppression of women, then on the other hand there are countries were women are worshipped and highly regarded, such as mothers who are responsible for their children’s education and wellbeing.

Woman also play an important role in economics, in families as well as for the state. They also gain more and more influence in politics. This is also part of Africa! 

The attention of filmmakers and the media is mostly directed – in sense of the victims – to negative occurrences like family oppressions and state institutions.

The program of the 5^th African film festival Hamburg at the studio cinema comes up with some multifarious impressions of Africa. This year the focus will be on the influence and perspective of African women, directed by African moviemakers. I hope that the festival will be an outstanding event which will lead to new information, impressions and experience to a continent which is not yet recognized for its beauty and variety.

Sylvaina Gerlich has been the first elected member of the Hamburg Integration Advisory Board for the continent of Africa since 2008 and board member of IMIC e.V. (Intercultural Migrant Integration Center e.V.). The association was founded in 2010 with the aim of supporting its members and outsiders of different origins in the integration and to enable a cultural exchange for a better mutual understanding in the society.

Sylvaina Gerlich ist seit dem Jahr 2008 erstes gewähltes Mitglied des Hamburger Integrationsbeirates für den Kontinent Afrika und Vorstand von IMIC e.V. (Interkulturelles Migranten Integrations Center e.V.). Der Verein wurde 2010 gegründet mit dem Ziel, seine Mitglieder und Außenstehende unterschiedlicher Herkunft bei der Integration zu unterstützen und einen kulturellen Austausch zum besseren gegenseitigen Verständnis in der Gesellschaft zu ermöglichen.

Seit 2012 feiern Afrikaner und Afro-Deutsche im Sommer den "Africa Day“ auf dem Wandsbeker Markt in Hamburg, den Sylvaina Gerlich ins Leben gerufen hat.
